Racism motions top City Council agenda

Bobby Tugbiyele — a city resident who has been a vocal supporter of the letter from Lowell DEI — said in an email the “resolution is self-serving, tone-deaf and fails the test of genuine understanding of the community.”

“Honoring the memory of George Floyd,  Auhmad Aubrey, Breonna Taylor and all the lives stolen from us due to racial injustice means that the road map towards healing and reconciliation must prioritize as well as amplify the proposals and policies outlined specifically from communities of color,” he wrote. “‘The Letter’ achieves that.”

The City Council meeting on Tuesday will be the first since the city held a listening session on racism on July 24. Theam said she wonders whether the speakers were heard.

“If they’re not ready I feel like the listening session was a waste of time,” she said. “Were they truly listening?”
