These Benches Will Speak to You

UMass Lowell News

Phase Two of a project begun last fall, designed to quietly inspire the UMass Lowell community, is underway now with the installation of six new benches, to be placed in well-traveled locations throughout UML North.

As was the case with the 13 benches placed last fall on UML South, each will be inscribed with an inspirational quote ; from a notable or nor-so-notable figure ; engraved on a plaque on the bench’s back rest. The project, sponsored by the Council on Diversity and Pluralism, is intended to promote and celebrate diversity on campus. The UML South benches ߞ; which surround the quadrangle in front of the McGauvran Student Union ; include quotes from a disparate range of figures, from Ghandi (“an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”) to Goldie Hawn and Martin Luther King.

Phase Three of the project, the installation of benches on UML East, will begin next spring. In anticipation of this, and in preparation for the UML North unveilings, the Council “invites the entire University community to get into the spirit” of things by suggesting appropriate quotes and aiding in the planning process.
