Community activist Bobby Tugbiyele was a judge for the event and said it concerned him that such topics as racism, discrimination, sexual abuse and substance abuse were issues for children at a very young age.

Tugbiyele and a Sun reporter both saw presentations from students on poor food quality in the schools, and how shards of glass had been found in salad and a carton of milk was recently found that was two years expired. He said he also found that concerning.

“It’s also encouraging to see young people who … kind of educate themselves around these issues and also educate their peers,” Tugbiyele said. “I hope they stay in Lowell because I told every single one of them that we need them more than they need us. We really need them.”
